Tips for Reading Poetry Aloud
Before attempting to read your poem aloud to other people, follow these steps:
1. Read aloud the poem to yourself many times to find the rhythm and meaning
2. Recognize the role that punctuation plays in the poem
3. Look up unfamiliar words
When you feel comfortable, you can read the poem to other people. Follow these tips!
1. Read title and author
2. Pause a few seconds between the title and the author and the first line
3. Read slowly but in a normal, relaxed tone of voice
4. Give slight pause after every line but do not make it sound choppy
5. Decide where you need voice changes (loud, soft, angry, excited)
